Making resolutions that stick
It’s New Year resolutions time again… time to put on the thinking cap and figure out how you want to approach the 2015.
But you know how most resolutions fall apart after a few weeks? It’s usually because it’s not the Real You in charge when you make them.
Let me explain.
There are all the standard resolutions for New Year, the resolutions that it sometimes seems as though everyone is doing: losing weight, going to the gym more, cutting down on alcohol. Good, healthy stuff.
But what if you take on a resolution that’s not Really you. It’s something that seems to be in the air, everyone’s doing it, and you think it’s a good idea so you sign up for it too.
You make a good start. You read up on good recipes, you sign up at your local gym, you banish the wine and the beer from your shopping basket. Great.
But then it starts to slip. Underneath, you know you’re doing it because you should, or because everyone else is doing it, or because it looked like a good idea. But really, deep down, you’d rather be putting your effort elsewhere.
And so you lose enthusiasm for what you’re doing. Your motivation drops and you don’t feel the commitment to follow through. Your Real emotions – your driving forces – are coming through once the initial excitement about doing something New has worn off. The shine is gone and your resolution slips off your radar, your old habits resume.
But what if your resolutions were really you – what if they were really aligned with who you are and what you really want to do? What if you create and commit to a resolution that resonates so deep down inside that you can’t not follow it through?
A very different story unfolds:
To make your resolution, first you spend time tuning in to yourself. You go deep down inside and get in touch with what you really want. You reconnect with your purpose and you feel the steady burn that’ll fuel you through. Your resolution comes from that place inside – not from TV or magazines, but from who you really are, and from what you really want to do.
It may not be an ‘ordinary’ kind of resolution, you know, something health or fitness related. But it’ll be Your resolution, which is what makes you stick with it and create the kind of changes that allow you to be really you, doing your very own Real thing.
When the Real You is in charge of making your resolution, you’re 100% involved. The deepest part of you wants to do this – not just your head, but all of you.
With a Real resolution, one that resonates with you, one that is personal to you, one that encompasses your dreams, life, and purpose, it serves you as much as you serve it.
